Colour Changing Water

Watch the children’s faces when they discover that they can make the colour in the water disappear! All you need to make this happen is:

  • 3 clear cups
  • 3 different food colourings
  • A little bit of bleach
  • Water
  • Dropper
  • Gloves
  • A stirrer

First, half fill each of the 3 cups with water and add a different colour food colouring to each. Then, using a dropper, add a few drops of bleach to each cup. Using the stirrer, stir away the colour.

Please ensure the safety of the children doing this experiment as it involves bleach. Make sure there is close adult supervision at all times and use the appropriate protective equipment (we used gloves).

Volcanic Eruption

Please take care when conducting this science experiment. Keep children far back and ensure that you use appropriate protective equipment. This is our second volcanic eruption experiment. You can find our first one here:

https://1ststeps.blog/2019/07/10/glitter-volcano-eruption/

The ingredients you will need for this volcanic eruption are:

  • a tablespoon of dry yeast
  • 12% peroxide
  • 3/4 cup of warm water
  • food colouring
  • plastic bottle
  • 2 cups
  • spoon
  • gloves
  • dish soap

First, fill a cup 3/4 of the way with the peroxide and pour into the bottle. Add a squirt of dish soap and a few drops of food colouring. Add the yeast to the warm water and stir until dissolved. Then add to the mixture. Give a gentle shake to start the eruption.

Here’s our video footage of the experiment:

Snow Storm in a Jar

So many children’s science experiments fail. They don’t always do what they are claimed to do on some blogs. However, this one has guaranteed great results.

All you need is:

  • Baby oil
  • White ready mix paint
  • 2 x soluable tablets
  • Jar
  • Water

First, fill half the jar with the baby oil. Then fill the rest of the jar up with water. Cover the bottom with a thick layer of the paint. Then pop in 2 soluable tablets. Give the mixture a little stir. Watch as the mixture starts to rise up in blobs then drop back down like snow.

This is so easy it can be done at school, nursery and at home.

Pepper Experiment

A great experiment with immediate results from the outset. All you need is:

  • A white plate
  • Pepper
  • Water
  • Washing up liquid

Firstly, put some water on the plate and sprinkle pepper across the water. Dip your finger in some washing up liquid, then just place your finger into the peppered water. Watch as the pepper moves away from your finger!

It’s a great idea to do at home with your children, at school or at nursery and watch the excitement in their faces as they develop their knowledge and understanding of the world.
